Submissions
We’re always reading for anthologies. Novel queries are open to authors we’ve already published. Read this whole page before you send anything — yes, even if you’ve submitted to us before.
Anthology short stories
- 5,000 to 8,000 words. Stay close to the bracket.
- Genre is negotiable as long as it fits the anthology’s concept and is entertaining. We don’t publish message fiction — the story comes first.
- One story submission per anthology, one anthology per open call. Don’t simultaneously submit the same story elsewhere.
- Do not submit before the call officially opens.
Formatting
- Times New Roman preferred. Georgia or Calibri accepted if you must.
- 12pt, double-spaced. First-line indents set via paragraph formatting, not tabs.
- Your name, story title and email in the document itself.
- Title formatted as a heading style. No chapters in a short story.
- Scene breaks: three centered asterisks.
- Save as .docx and send as an attachment — no shared links. If you can’t produce .docx, email us before submitting.
RADICAL TRANSPARENCY
Terms — in public, like everything else here
Raconteur holds rights for one year after an anthology’s publication. After that, rights revert to you, and we keep paying royalties for as long as the anthology sells.
Authors receive an equal percentage share of proceeds alongside the Press, our editors and administration. We don’t take 80% off the top and split the rest between every author.
Anthologies are capped at ten stories, specifically so that equal share stays meaningful.
Getting paid
Payments and tax forms run through Pubshare, so contributors need a free Pubshare account. When you set it up, choose how you want to be paid — PayPal monthly, or cheque quarterly — and enter that information immediately. Pubshare holds royalties until you do.

Novels
Novel queries are open if you’ve been previously published by Raconteur Press — including as a contributor to one of our anthologies. If that’s you, send a query and the first three chapters of your complete manuscript using the same formatting guidelines above.
If it’s not you yet, an anthology is the way in. It’s how most of our novelists started.
